Lewes independent shops

Lewes is the county town of East Sussex with good reason – its beguiling blend of the ancient and the modern, the unconventional and intriguing is Sussex to a tee.

Medieval streets, ancient churches and tiny twittens (the local argot for alleyways) give visitors a glimpse into bygone days. In the centre of town, the majestic remains of a Norman castle dominate the skyline, while even the 16th century Anne of Cleves House is predated by the fabulous 15th Century Bookshop at the top of the high street.

These historic and special interest sites rub shoulders with contemporary art galleries and a host of small, specialist, independent retailers. Bookshops, boutiques, antique centres and craft workshops; bijou cafes, eclectic restaurants and cosy pubs: the independent Sussex spirit runs through them all.
